Well in advance (4 to 8 weeks)….

  • Make sure your passport is current.
  • Apply for proper visas for your destination country. If you are moving for business your employer may take care of this for you.
  • Decide which household goods will be appropriate to ship overseas and which will need to be stored or donated.
  • Plan a move program with your moving company. Discuss packing, inventories, potential storage, and time frame for the move. The moving company can help you with customs information for your destination country as well.
  • Buy an organizer for all of your move information.

2 to 3 weeks before your move….

  • Notify the post office of your new address and arrange for mail forwarding.
  • Cancel subscriptions for newspapers, cable TV and notify utilities of your service termination date.
  • Make sure all your travel documents are in order.
  • Ask for copies of records from your medical providers. Don't forget about the vet!
Just before move day….
  • Call your mover and confirm your move date.
  • Separate items not to be shipped from those to be transported overseas.
  • Gather medicines and important supplies for your travel.
  • Leave a forwarding address for the new occupants at your old residence.
